Capability � that�s what customers will get even more of with the new Explorer, thanks to an available 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine rated at 280 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm on premium fuel. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost is available on the base, XLT and Limited series. For the first time, customers choosing a four-cylinder Explorer can also opt for four-wheel drive and trailer towing capability.
The standard 3.5-liter V6 engine for base, XLT and Limited models � with 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque � is paired with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission.
The 2016 Explorer Sport and the Platinum edition get a standard 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 making 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque also mated with the six-speed SelectShift.
The new Platinum series interior treatment incorporates brushed-aluminum and satin-finished ash wood. The wood-trimmed, leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel includes unique stitching that matches the stitching used throughout the interior.
Marking the exterior changes are more robust headlamps, with available LED signature lighting. The new closed-off lower roof rack cascades rainwater off the vehicle and improves aerodynamics.
Interior changes include real buttons to replace touch-sense buttons on the infotainment system and more refined detailing throughout.
New technologies available in the 2016 Explorer include: Front and rear cameras with washers, Enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, park-out assist and semi-automatic parallel parking, Smart-charging USB ports, a hands-free liftgate, active grille shutters, and a 500-watt Sony audio system.
